Can anyone recommend what's the best brand for optic mounted on a 12ga, both for tactical training and home defense?

I don't have near enough experience to recommend any particular model or brand, but I'll be glad to share my personal experience with the one that I got. My wife (who had never shot a gun before) decided that it would be good if we had a firearm for home defense. Living in a handgun restricted state I traded in a couple of my long guns for a Model 500 Mossberg 20 gauge. Since then we've gotten state pistol licenses and the 20 gauge has been replaced by handguns for home defense, although the shotgun is in battery and ready at a moments notice. Trying to squeeze more use out of all our possessions I figured the Mossberg would be good for deer hunting (bow or shotgun only where we live) but the single bead on the muzzle was just not gonna cut it. Being partial to Sig products when I saw that they had a Red Dot on sale for around $120 (as I remember) I bought one and then I got a pica tinny rail from Amazon. Mounting was a breeze. Used blue Loctite on all the mounting screws. It took a couple of trips to the range, but once sighted in, the red-dot and gun are more accurate than I am. I call it a virtual laser, no one can see but me. Haven't taken it in the woods yet but at the range it is FUN. www.facebook.com/jeff.dein/videos/10203265272698637/?l=1060384236336715645Some pictures of the set-up:www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10201460287735141.1073742004.1414022146&type=1&l=7f39575c7e

Also, this'd be excellent for Turkey hunting as well. Bought a box of #4 shotshells and I'm planning to pattern the gun at different range distances.

Make sure you take into consideration your rear sight is mounted on your optics rail, so whatever base that you select May be an inappropriate size if you want to retain your rear sight. So the solution is for you to purchase a longer mounting rail with a quick detached mounting system to retain the use of your factory sight. Hope this will answer your question.

It's our 20 gauge with a Sig Red-Dot that I had mounted.

Now I'm embarrassed, it was around 25'. In our defense we did some offhand shooting @ 50 yds. and kept them in the chest cavity. <3 that Red-Dot.

what is most important when training, is to keep all realistically. so the distance is actually realistic!

Max The Mossberg 500 that we have never had a rear sight so the Red Dot is the only sighting system. Being electronic it may not always be reliable. That being said, the next trip to the range we'll do some shooting with the Red-Dot off and see how it shoots. For home defense ranges it shouldn't make any difference, or should it?
